Photo of vineyardLa Famiglia grows much of its own fruit and also purchases grapes from independent growers around the State of California, seeking the most suitable microclimates and soils for each variety. Winemaker Scott Kelly's intuitive approach to winegrowing begins in the vineyards with an intimate knowledge of both terroir and growing seasons as they relate to Italian varieties.

La Famiglia has found that Pinot Grigio does best when planted in the cooler regions of California, such as Carneros and Monterey, where the majority of the grapes are selected. To understand and study this variety's potential, we have experimental plantings of Pinot Grigio in vineyards in the Stags Leap and Carneros districts.

Barbera has been grown in California since the latter part of the twentieth century. At one time, there was more Barbera planted in California than any other grape variety. We seek grapes grown in regions of cool nights and low-vigor soils, where the purest, most vibrant fruit character develops. Grapes are selected from several appellations, focusing on old Barbera vines that yield balance with good fruit concentration and suppleness. Our winegrowing team is looking to the North Coast as a growing area for Barbera. Similar climatic conditions exist in this region as in Piedmonte, the Italian homeland of this variety.

For Sangiovese we have found that close spacing reduces the vigor, focusing the vine's energy into ripening fruit with intense, concentrated red cherry and plum flavors, spiciness and silky tannins. Sparsely planted in California, La Famiglia selects Sangiovese grapes grown throughout the state, but mainly from the Napa Valley. Extensive research and experimentation has produced the highest quality Sangiovese in this unique microclimate and terroir.

As a result of our careful selection of grapes from vineyards across the state, our Californian Italian varietals have a distinct flavor profile and are more fruit-driven than their Italian counterparts.
